After-School Central, (also known as "ASC) is designed to partner with parents by providing a FREE, safe and supervised after-school education, enrichment, and recreation program for middle school students in Columbia City. Our 1 staff works in conjunction with a team of adult community volunteers to provide a balance of recreation, education, and enrichment through the daily structure of activities. Free snacks are provided daily to students, as well as an hour of free (recreational) time in the gym, game room, and computer lab. Education and enrichment happens during "Options" and "Homework Time," two 30-minute blocks of time for various opportunities, including homework help or creativity classes. Creativity classes vary from week to week, but include art classes, service projects, guitar lessons, fitness training, small group discussions and a variety of other activities.
After-School Central Mentors work with ASC Staff to supervise and facilitate after-school activities, but primarily focus on interacting with and pursuing healthy relationships with attending students. ASC Mentors provide positive relationships, encouragement, and healthy role modeling to students.
We are looking for adults who will volunteer 1 afternoon weekly from 3:45-6pm (Tues., Wed, or Thurs during the school year).
Healthy young people don't just happen. They are taught, they are led, they are loved. That's why we are passionate about working with local middle and high school students and nudging them toward strong caring relationships, good character, positive recreation, educational and service opportunities, and spiritual development. We invest in our kids by meeting them at the center of their lives, in the whirlwind of activities that are described on this site.
The Governor's Commission for a Drug-Free Indiana recently recognized The Center for its impact on Whitley County (read press release here). This story is actually the story of many students whose lives have been touched by the life-changing work of The Center.
Because The Center's mission is so important to students, we do not charge fees for participation. Our programs are funded entirely by contributions. Less than 1% percent of The Center's support comes in the form of government funding.
The vision of The Center is to support Whitley County youth through: Youth Development --through the building of assets Service --by providing programs that meet real youth needs Outreach--accomplished through relationships
Collaboration --by providing a facility for, and partnering with like-minded youth organizations
