Cherry Trees

Hello Friends!

It's that time of year again for the annual National Cherry Blossom Festival at National Mall and Memorial Parks March 23rd to April 13th! We simply cannot pull off this gargantuan event without your help. Join us in the fun and excitement!

My name is James Pierce and I am working to recruit volunteers for the festival. We need your help with the recycling effort. Hundreds of thousands of visitors come to the park to enjoy these beautiful cherry trees, a gift from Japan in 1912.

Lots of visitors equals lots of waste, much of which can be recycled. We want to make sure that happens, and we cannot do it without your help!

Volunteers will rove the busiest areas of the festival and collect recyclables using trash grabbers. Volunteers will also help remove full bags from recycling containers and replace them with empty bags. Gloves, trash grabbers, and a cool shirt will be provided. :)

We have two time slots available:

9am-11:30am and 12:00pm -2:30pm, Saturday and Sunday.

Update: Time Slot currently available

April 1 st, 2 nd 3 rd.

We can certainly be flexible with times. We will have a cap of 50 people per time slot. We need all the help we can get! Groups and individuals of all ages are welcome!

Please contact me to sign up, if you have any questions or need more information.

Come make a difference and keep the park clean while helping to ensure the preservation of these living legacies to international friendship.

Thank you, friends, for all that you do. We look forward to seeing you!

Our friends at American Express helped us make a promotional video, if you volunteered look to see if you’re on it!

Description

The Washington that you see today had its birth two centuries ago in a rational yet visionary design unprecedented in its scale. Pierre Charles L'Enfant's plan for the city and its core mall area was influenced by urban planning then current in Euproe and neoclassical landscape design exemplified by Versalles. Brilliantly adapting those ideas to Washington's terrain, L'Enfant placed the Capitol on Jenkins Hill and the "Presidents House" on a lower terrace then overlooking the Potomac River. Between them ran Pennsylvania Avenue, to symbolize the spearate but connected branches of government. The spirit of that plan lives in the city still.
