Description
LJHA operates the Lake Jackson Historical Museum, the Alden B. Dow Office Museum, and the Jackson Plantation Historic Site.
The Lake Jackson Historical Museum chronicles the rich history of the area from native Karankawa hunters to wartime industry and beyond. Volunteers are essential in the daily operations of the museum, from greeting visitors and running the gift shop to digitizing historic photos and helping set up for events and exhibits. Volunteers are needed Tuesdays through Saturdays. Shifts are generally 3 hours long but can be shorter depending on the task.
At the Alden B. Dow Office Museum, our volunteers serve as docents to show visitors this fully restored 1943 office that was used to design the city's buildings and winding streets. One of the first buildings constructed in the city, it housed the first post office, city hall, barbershop, and more. Volunteers are needed on Saturdays, and shifts are generally 3 hours long.
The Jackson Plantation Historic Site is a State Archeological Landmark and includes the remnants of twelve structures of the Lake Jackson Plantation. Built and operated by enslaved labor, the plantation became one of the most profitable sugar refineries in the state in 1844. Volunteers welcome the public and share information about the site. Volunteers are needed on Saturdays, and shifts are generally 2 hours long.
All volunteers will receive the necessary training before starting. We will give you all the knowledge you need to be a successful volunteer for LJHA. Just bring your love of history!
