A great way to get introduced to the theatre is by being on the followspot crew. This crew operates the followspots which are used primarily in musical productions. Working with the light board operator and stage manager, you take your "cues" from the stage manager as to when and where your spot is used. And yes, the master electrician will provide training on how to run the instrument.
NOTE: Due to the pandemic, our 2020-21 Season has not yet been announced. Shows and dates, as well as any changes to volunteer practices, will be posted on our backstage volunteer page, https://www.dmplayhouse.com/volunteer/back-stage/

The mission of The Des Moines Playhouse is to produce high quality theatrical presentations utilizing the skills and talents of a group consisting primarily of volunteers for the cultural enrichment of the Central Iowa community, and to provide education in theatre arts for all ages, with an emphasis on young people.
The Des Moines Playhouse is a community theatre, producing 12-14 shows (Broadway musicals, comedies, dramas, family shows) each year. It is the second largest and one of the six oldest continuously operating community theatres in the US. The Playhouse also has one of the largest theatre education programs in the country, with classes for ages 4-adult.
We'll work with your schedule.
