FOL volunteers donate their time tutoring adult learners, serving as classroom aides, working in the FOL office, assisting at special events and serving on committees. Tutors help adult learners master reading, math and language skills, and can also work with English language learners, in a number of different adult education programs in Knox County. Studies show that students who work one-on-one with a tutor are more likely to advance in study and will increase educational levels at a quicker pace than those who do not have the benefit of individual tutoring. FOL offers a six-hour volunteer orientation and training program as either a one-day session or two evening sessions on an as-needed basis. Anyone wishing to volunteer in any aspect must complete the entire program.
