Algonac State Park, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Help us remove garlic mustard from the trails and wooded areas and keep thousands of these invasive seeds out of the seed bank. We hope to be pulling as a follow-up to other efforts earlier in the season, so bring your keen eyesight and your sense of adventure as we hope to cover a lot of ground. This is a great activity for the whole family. Meet in the day use area near the main park entrance on M-29. Map: 42.6490,-82.5155

About Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Parks and Recreation Division, Stewardship Unit

Location:

4631 Bishop Lake Rd, DNR Stewardship Field Office, Howell, MI 48843, US

Mission Statement

To preserve, protect and restore the natural and cultural resources present within Michigan State Parks for this and future generations.

Description

Volunteers will help steward natural areas (woodlands, wetlands, prairies, etc.) within Michigan state parks and recreation areas. These efforts will help protect entire ecosystems as well as individual species - especially those in greatest need of conservation ("Species of Special Concern" and those whose populations are "Threatened" or "Endangered").

Currently, Core Volunteer Stewards are volunteering at monthly volunteer workdays on weekends at 7 southeast Michigan parks and recreation areas. Volunteers do a variety of activities throughout the year including: removing invasive non-native plants, collecting seed from native plants, and planting native seedlings. Volunteers can also participate in a number of Individual Projects like Insect Monitoring, Photographic Monitoring and Invasive Plant Mapping - to name a few.

No previous experience is need to participate, though some training might be necessary for certain projects.
