This is a great way to spend a bit more time with an individual senior, get to know them better -- and they really love it! We work with over 1,000 seniors annually and many of them are very isolated and have limited opportunity to interact with others. They have seen so much and have amazing stories and experiences to share. We organize visits for groups on Saturdays, but can also get you connected to a senior any other time that is convenient for you. This is a truly rewarding way to spend a couple hours of your time and it makes such a huge difference to the seniors. Volunteers with the availability to build a relationship with a particular senior and sustain it over the course of months are especially needed!

Mission Statement

We Are Family reaches out with services, advocacy, and companionship to isolated, low-income seniors in the Shaw, Columbia Heights, Petworth and Adams Morgan areas of Washington, DC, using a volunteer-driven model, grounded in grassroots senior leadership.

Description

We Are Family serves seniors in the Shaw, Columbia Heights, Petworth, and Adams Morgan neighborhoods of Washington, DC. We bring advocacy, services, organizing, and companionship into the homes of the elderly, while helping to build friendships across boundaries like race, class, religion, age, culture, and sexual orientation.

Most of our work is done by volunteers. While many of those who help do the work of We Are Family are seniors themselves -- who, after all, have built this community -- *we need you as well.* We use volunteer assistance for our outreach and our grocery deliveries to over 1,000 seniors each month. Please join us!
