The Life Skills Mentor promotes the mission of BHGH helping scholars achieve independence, responsible behaviors and practice good decision-making with simple tracking and weekly meetings targeting the following success outcomes for scholars:
- Advises scholars about maintaining positive peer networks, discusses behavioral concerns, and coaches scholars through adverse situations
- Plans meaningful bi-weekly outings or in person meetings with scholars building a trusting relationship which will promote conversation and regular communication
- Prepares with scholar ways to complete the On Course for Life goals for each service plan
Schedule
Academic year (September - May): approximately 2-4 hours every other week on- and off-site with scholars. Must have availability to meet with scholars after school or weekends
Summer: maintain communication with scholar (approximately 2-4 hours twice per month).
Qualifications:
A) Bachelors degree in education, social work, psychology, counseling or related field of study, a plus.
B) Prior experience preferred, for example, teaching middle and/or high school aged students, or in the administration of an educational program serving middle or high school students
C) Effective verbal, nonverbal, and written communication is essential
D) Ability to provide critical feedback in a non-threatening and motivating manner
E) Ability to correspond with students, parents, or BHGH staff
F) Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
G) Ability to develop positive relationships with various populations, including scholars and their families
H) Creativity in presenting material and motivating scholars to pursue their education
I) Able to assist scholars in developing study and problem solving skills
J) Professional work habits and appropriate dress
K) Proficiency in basic word-processing and web-based applications

BHGH is a privately funded, non-profit organization. BHGH provides children with long-term, value centered homes coupled with a private preparatory education. Financial assistance is provided through college for all program graduates.
