Baby Western Pond Turtle
Western Pond Turtle born at the Effie Yeaw Nature Center

If you love snakes, owls, hawks, and Nature, this may be the position you are looking for. Duties include cleaning out the animal enclosures, handling the snakes and raptors and other animals, and assisting with general animal care and maintenance.

Volunteers work at the Effie Yeaw Nature Center in Ancil Hoffman in Carmichael. It is a beautiful setting where you often see deer or turkey as you approach the Nature Center from the parking lot.

At this time, we need an Animal Care Assistant for Tuesdays or Thursdays. The shift is from 8:30 to 12:30 or so. Volunteers are assigned one day a week and continue to come in on the same day each week.

Volunteers must be able to work in close quarters, bend, kneel, squat, lift 25 pounds, and be okay with handling snakes (gopher, king, etc.), as well as hawks and other raptors.

The longer you volunteer with us, the more you know, and the more responsibilities you can take on (if you choose!). You will learn a lot about our local animals and nature. The minimum time commitment is 6 months.

Contact me at the Nature Center by email anytime. I work part-time and will get back with you as soon as I can. Thank you for your interest in volunteering with us!
