Purpose - The Academic Coach helps students develop a positive attitude toward learning by guiding them through school assignments.
Location of Assignment - Assigned school or program to be determined by Site Coordinator, Volunteer Coordinator, and volunteer.
Days & Times of Assignment - Sessions generally take place throughout the school day or during the afterschool program. Schedule to determined by Site Coordinator and volunteer.
Supervising Staff - Site Coordinator & Classroom Teacher
Training - CIS volunteer orientation, training on site with site coordinator, and other ongoing workshops as needed
Responsibilities - Academic coaches meet with assigned student(s) on a regular basis, assist with specific classroom assignments, reinforce & supplement current lesson, encourage goal setting by students, develop ongoing relationship with student(s) through dialogue, serve as a role model, and communicate regularly with teacher about student's progress. Responsibilities may be less intensive, such as those of a Reading Buddy, who may listen while an elementary student reads a book aloud. Other responsbilities may require more in-depth guidance and tutoring. Teachers may assign specific tasks, or exercises may follow a supplemental curriculum.
