KRM is always looking for dedicated individuals who enjoy working with our refugee toddlers and mothers at our Family Center located at Highland Baptist Church on the corner of Cherokee and Grinstead. The Family Center is dedicated to providing English classes for mothers who will not be working in the near future because of the young age of their children so that they may have a chance to become better assimilated into the United States culture. Volunteers are responsible for assisting the lead daycare teachers with tasks of the day. Volunteers working with the ESL class are responsible for teaching English/civics lessons to a small group of refugee women and assisting the ESL teacher. The Family Center is open every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 9am-12:30pm .
Supervisor: Liz Virgo, Family Center/Early Childhood Coordinator
Volunteer Impact: Volunteers who work at the Family Center provide additional support and care for toddlers and assist in building confidence in the children. Additionally, volunteers help in keeping operations running smoothly by giving the assistant director room to handle other problems that arise.
Volunteers in the ESL department help to give the women more individual attention than they would if there was only one ESL teacher. The women tend to respond and learn better in such an environment, and English lessons go much further than they normally would.
