Like a good challenge? Helping others? Working in a collegial, team environment? Interested in health care issues? Enjoy the feeling of making someone’s day? If so, we’re looking for a volunteer like you!

PA Medi is Pennsylvania’s State Health Insurance Assistance Program designed to help Pennsylvanians understand their health care options. In Allegheny County, the PA Medi program is operated by Wesley Family Services in partnership with the Allegheny County Area Agency on Aging.

PA Medi assists clients through one-on-one counseling sessions:

  • helping them understand their Medicare and Medicaid benefits,
  • informing them of their choices about healthcare coverage,
  • identifying other medical assistance programs for which they might be eligible, and
  • assisting with the completion of the benefit applications.

There are a variety of opportunities to get involved as a volunteer with PA Medi, from assisting with important administrative functions, to giving presentations in the community, to becoming a trained expert counselor.

Please contact Jody at Jody.Perez@wfspa.org or call 412-342-2248 to have an informational/application packet sent to you.

Mission Statement

In Service of Seniors: Pittsburgh (ISOS) and Open Your Heart to a Senior in Westmoreland County are programs of Wesley Family Services with a mission to maximize the independence of older adults in Allegheny County and Westmoreland County through practical volunteer-based supports.

Description

In Service of Seniors: Pittsburgh and Open Your Heart to a Senior (OYHS) are part of an initiative of the United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania. Seniors who need some extra support to live independently at home and feel connected to their community are matched with volunteers in their neighborhood.

Volunteers are able to have flexible/self-service scheduling which allows volunteers to view and select activities that they would like to do. Some of the activities available are grocery shopping for or with an older adult, providing rides to appointments, friendly visiting, helping a senior with low vision read their mail, and more! Some of our opportunities are suspended at this time due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Please contact us for a current list of available opportunities.

In Allegheny County, we also offer Medicare counseling through our APPRISE program and home safety checks for seniors through the Safety for Seniors program.
