Mission Statement

To maintain the independence, enhance the quality of life, and offer a supportive network of olders persons, their families or other caregivers by advocating for, educating about, coordinating, and implementing programs and services for adults in the tri-jurisdictional area.

Description

The Prince William Area Agency on Aging (PWAAA) is one of over 670 Area Agencies on Aging established under the regulations of the Administration on Aging.  It is part of the Prince William County government with funding from the Older Americans Act, the Virginia General Assembly, the Department of Labor, the Cities of Manassas and Manassas Park, Prince William County and grants and donations.

Residents, age 60 years and older, of Prince William County, the City of Manassas, or the City of Manassas Park are invited to participate in programs sponsored by the PWAAA.

Programs and services provided by the PWAAA include:

Senior Assist:  provides comprehensive information and support to older persons and their families or caregivers, and information to colleagues and the public about aging related programs and services.  The PWAAA provides basic information and referral to link older persons to information, services and resources to meet their needs and provides free screening to determine the need for assistance and eligibility for community programs and services.

Senior Centers:Â Â these centers provide a variety of services, programs and activities to include health screening, educational programs, recreation, arts and crafts and volunteering.

Caregivers Resource Center (CRC):  provides information, education and support to caregivers of older adults in the Prince William area.  The CRC contains books and videos available to loan, resource information about available programs and sevices, information about Alzheimer's Disease and realted disorders, and Adult Day Care, Respite Care, Medicare, Medicaid, Nursing Homes and Long Term Care.

Nutrition:Â Â nutritious meals and related services to socially and/or economically needy adults are provided in a congregate setting, and to homebound, health impaired older adults through home delivered meals by volunteer couriers.

Long Term Care - which includes the following services:

Senior Day Program:Â Â a range of group-based, therapeutic activties, personal care, health monitoring and social services to health and functionally impaired older adults who cannot or should not remain at home alone during the day are provided as well as essential respite care and support to family caregivers at two locations.

Case Management Services:Â Â assistance is available to assess the needs of older persons as well as identifying, coordinating and monitoring appropriate services and client progress where needed.

Through the Senior Assist Program, assistance is provided to older adults who are facing difficulty remaining in their homes due to health related and other reasons and need assistance in arranging, coordinating and monitoring services.

Telephone Reassurance:Â Â Senior Center volunteers make regular telephone calls to check on the safety and well-being of home-bound older adults.

Companion Aide Registry:Â Â listings of self-employed individuals who can offer in-home care or minor home repairs.

Elderly Protective Assistance Program (EPA):  the EPA program is a volunteer-based service to older adults who may requre varying levels of assistance in managing their affairs.  Services in the EPA program include Friendly Visitor, Advisor/Counselor and Guardianship.

Aditional Programs and Services:
VICAP:Â Â provides counseling and help in understanding Medicare, Medicaid, medical bills and assistance in making decisions about Medicare supplemental or long-term care insurance.

Northern Virginia Ombudsman Program:Â Â assists in resolving complaints when direct effort fails, about long term care, facility care, and in-home care through mediation or investigation.
