Refurb
Technology Systems Technicians refurbish and configure computers to meet quality standards to distribute to students in grades 3-8 without home computer access.

Help Comp-U-Dopt give basic computer education to children in the greater Houston area.

The Computer Adoption program has run since 2007 and has placed over 6000 computers into the homes of children without access. The program takes donated corporate and individual computers, refurbishes them and distributes them to students in grades 3-8 without access to a computer in the home.

Technology Systems Technicians refurbish and configure computers to meet quality standards for donation at regular adoption sessions. Advanced team members may also: provide support and training for newer volunteers and/or in our classroom environment; provide support for Comp-U-Dopt's infrastructure as well as for those who have received a donated computer through our Help Desk Team, documenting all steps taken to update troubleshooting and tech guides as needed.

About Comp-U-Dopt, Inc.

Location:

1602 Airline Drive, Houston, TX 77009, US

Mission Statement

Comp-U-Dopt has as its mission three related goals:

1) Assisting corporations with their environmental stewardship by providing an avenue for donation of used computers that avoids data security issues, avoids software license issues, is environmentally friendly, and supports a worthwhile cause;

2) Providing computers to children in underserved communities in the greater Houston area; and

3) Providing basic and intermediate computer education to computer donation recepients.

Description

Comp-U-Dopt accepts donations of complete computers (computer, monitor, keyboard and mouse) with hard drives and Pentium II processors or higher. The hard drives are wiped to DoD standards; the computer is never booted on the original operating system. Edubuntu, a special education version of the ubuntu release of Linux is loaded on the machines, which includes Open Office and various educational games.

Houston area children in elementary school (grades 3-5) and junior high school (grades 6-8) may apply to receive a computer by filling out the application form available at www.compudopt.org. This application requires writing a short description of why the child wants a computer, and what he/she intends to do with it. Children are selected by area on a first come, first served basis.

To receive a computer, the child and a parent/guardian must attend a 2-hour "adoption session", where the child will learn basic operation of the computer. At the end of the session, the child must write a thank-you note, which is sent by Comp-U-Dopt to the computer donor. Additional optional classes are available to learn more advanced skills.
