During the months of November & December, volunteer ship visitors & board members, clergy & staff from Seafarers' House will hand deliver several thousand wrapped shoeboxes filled with socks, toiletries and holiday cheer to the many seafarers who come into Port Everglades from all over the world. An almost invisible population, most seafarers come from parts of the world where going to sea is the best option to support families. It's always hardest during the holidays to be away from loved ones; our little gift is appreciated along with new faces and caring smiles! There are several ways to volunteer:
Four VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES:
#1- ORGANIZE A DRIVE, COLLECT OR PURCHASE ANY of the following NEW items in regular sizes please. Each Seafarer will receive a decorated shoebox containing the following 11 ITEMS. Call 954-734-1580 for more info and the arrange for delivery starting in September.
- After shave
- Combs
- Deodorant
- Disposable razors
- Shampoo
- Shaving Cream
- Soap/ Shower Gel
- Tooth Brushes
- Toothpaste
- Pencils/ pens/ pencil sharpeners
- White athletic socks
OPTIONAL EXTRAS - These extra items that a seafarer might enjoy finding included with the above: Playing cards, Picture post cards, Calendars with pretty pictures, A Christmas card from the donor, A Christmas letter or drawing from a child, Hard candy, work gloves
#2- FILLED AND DECORATED "COMPLETE BOXES": This is a volunteer task that can be done at home, school or work- alone or as a group project!
A "Complete Box" is filled with all 11 items from above list, wrapped or decorated so that the lid can be removed for security. Student volunteers can earn 1 HOUR VOLUNTEER CREDIT for each COMPLETE BOX delivered to Seafarers' House PORT EVERGLADES, in Fort Lauderdale, FLORIDA 33316 . #3- SHOEBOX WRAPPERS- Wrap or decorate empty shoeboxes & lids so that the lid can be removed. Can be done at our location or at home, school,or work. Student volunteers can earn 15 MINUTES VOLUNTEER CREDIT for every empty wrapped shoebox delivered to Seafarers' House IN PORT EVERGLADES, FLORIDA. #4- SHOEBOX DELIVERY: Ever been on a cargo ship or oil tanker? 90% of everything we use, comes to us by sea! Sign up to deliver filled & decorated shoeboxes to seafarers who are away from their families. Our visits aboard ships arriving at PORT EVERGLADES in Fort Lauderdale Florida leave a lasting impression that someone cares. Experienced volunteers, clergy and staff bring vans of up to 6 volunteer visitors to the ships and supervise the visit - a once in a lifetime experience! Must be 18 years old and physically able to climb steep stairs/ gangplanks to board cargo ships. Small groups of students, accompanied by parent or teachers will be considered on a case by case basis. Reply via Volunteer Match and Someone will call to schedule before November.

Description
Seafarers' House is a multi-faith mission and hospitality center for crew members of ships that visit Port Everglades as well as members of the port community. Most who visit Seafarers' House want to make low cost calls on one of the more than 85 phones available or connect via our free wi-fi service. In addition, we offer a small store, free transportation, internet access, access to multi-faith clergy and safe money transfer service. Seafarers' House is open throughout the year as a safe, friendly place where mariners can connect to their families, relax, ask questions about the community, and get emergency help if needed.
