Adult volunteers are needed at Greater New Britain Teen Pregnancy Prevention Inc.'s Pathways/Senderos Center. It is important for our students to have positive interactions with people from a variety of backgrounds. After school, students come to the Center and receive help with homework and other academic projects. Job training is also a big part of our program and volunteers share advice on obtaining a job and excelling at it. Volunteers will serve as mentors to the students as well as advocates for the program. Once you begin working with Pathways/Senderos, we hope you will be inclined to spread the word about the benefits of the program. Hours for volunteering: Monday through Friday 2:45pm-5:00pm.

About Pathways/Senderos

Location:

Mission Statement

To eliminate teen pregnancy by addressing its root causes, assuring high school graduation, and promoting adult self-sufficiency. To provide long-term, comprehensive, holistic services by creating a parallel family structure with neighborhood youth and parents. (Diplomas Before Diapers)

Description

Pathways/Senderos is a neighborhood-based program that targets poverty-stricken youth and their families for comprehensive, holistic services designed ultimately to prevent teen pregnancy.

It is based on a highly successful program begun in the 1980's by Dr. Michael Carrera and the Children's Aid Society. The Carrera model uses a case management approach to provide long-term, intensive services for youth and their families.

Our program model includes six integrated components: academic support; career preparation; family life and sex education; recreation/lifetime sports; health care; and self-esteem enhancement.
