St. Stephen's Human Services is seeking Overnight Shelter Volunteers to work with shelter staff, assist in shelter operations, ensure shelter guests' basic needs are met for the evening, contribute to hospitality, and provide a safe and dignified shelter environment.

The shelter opens at 5:30pm, volunteers arrive around 6pm, and the shelter closes at 7am. Lights-out for shelter guests is 10:30pm on weeknights & Sundays, and midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assist shelter guests in becoming acclimated to the shelter
  • Distribute mail to shelter guests
  • Assist with kitchen and meal duties as needed
  • Provide hospitality to shelter guests
  • Answer shelter phone as needed
  • Assist with upholding shelter policies and procedures
  • Set out coffee and light breakfast in the morning
  • Wake guests as needed for work and appointments
  • Distribute lunches to guests in the morning
  • Provide a brief written report to volunteers and staff
  • Lock up shelter and ensure all guests have left the building
  • Be present at the shelter from 6pm to 7am
Volunteers sleep in a separate room than shelter guests. Volunteers are able to sleep approximately 5 hours during their service. There are always two overnight volunteers for every shift.
