California Reentry Program

Volunteer at San Quentin State Prison (must be 21 or older)

The California Reentry Program at San Quentin State Prison needs dedicated volunteers!

The California Reentry Program at San Quentin State Prison is an independent advising program that seeks to cover a wide array of future parolees’ needs. Our services include academic advising, referrals to housing resources, job advice/placement, child-support issues, support groups, etc. We provide one-on-one counseling with inmates who are paroling within the next few weeks, months and years. They come to us with questions about their future in regards to education, housing requests, etc. and it's our job to assess their current needs, experience and interests, and support them in establishing a plan to achieve their goals once paroled. Many of the men want to know how to get their GEDs, some want an Associate of Arts degree, others have questions about what it might take to open a hot dog stand or start a new career. We also help fill out college/financial aid applications. During COVID, we have also expanded to do gate pick-ups and post-release assistance.

We are looking for highly reliable people to assist as:
  • Reentry Advisors; at the moment all advising is done via correspondence
  • Volunteers to provide gate pick-ups
  • Volunteers to be part of a post-release support team
  • Volunteers who are interested in website development and social media
  • Volunteers interested in fundraising
  • Volunteers who are interested in research and data
Excellent experience for aspiring social workers, educators, counselors, and law students. Fun, challenging, and truly inspirational. We are looking for at least a 6-month commitment but prefer a 1-year commitment. People from all backgrounds and work experience are welcome - all you need is some comfort with internet searches and making phone inquiries.

San Quentin is currently closed to programs, we expect to return toward the end of the year and will be needing advisors the following times (tentative.

Tuesday 6:00 - 8:30 pm

Thursday 6:00- 8:30 pm

Friday 2:00 - 5:00 pm

Experienced volunteers can be promoted to supervising programs either in the evenings or during the day.

Mission Statement

The mission of the California Reentry Program is to assist
California prisoners in successfully reentering society. This will include developing parole plans; providing prisoners assistance with developing social skills and obtaining services in their local communities; promoting public support for such programs; and providing a model for reentry programs that can be replicated in California and elsewhere.

Description

The California Reentry Program is a comprehensive, multi-faceted program aimed at meeting all of the most vital needs of prisoners facing parole. We are primarily a social service referral agency, connecting parolees with resources and contact information for services in their communities. Our team of volunteers meet with prisoners at San Quentin State Prison and provide individualized assistance based on their needs and location of parole. A partial list of our services is as follows.

  • Drop-in Assistance - For prisoners with specific questions that can be addressed in one or two meetings with a volunteer advisor. We hand out resource booklets, DMV, Social Security, and child support information, as well as information about colleges and financial aid.

  • Long-term Case Management - This program is for prisoners who need multiple meetings with a volunteer, to assist them in long-term planning in matters including employment, education, medical needs, drug/alcohol treatment, housing etc.

  • Guest Speakers - The California Reentry Program provides speakers one to two times per month to talk about their areas of expertise, such as resume building, health issues, interview skills, immigration, record expungement, and other topics pertinent to re-entry into the community.
