Company Description
The Girls’ Jazz and Blues Society (TGJBS) is a nonprofit organization committed to empowering young women, particularly from marginalized communities, through music education and leadership opportunities. The organization specifically targets girls in the greater Sacramento and Lodi areas, offering workshops, summer camps, and year-round programming that encourages self-expression, builds confidence, and combats gender and racial barriers in the music industry.
Role
This is a part-time, volunteer role for a Board Member at The Girls' Jazz and Blues Society. The Board Member will be responsible for overseeing the strategic direction and financial performance of the organization, ensuring legal and ethical integrity, and enhancing the organization's public standing. The role includes attending virtual board meetings, participating in potential fundraising efforts, and supporting the development of strategic partnerships to further the organization's mission and goals. Board Members are in close communication with the Executive Director, who runs the program operationally, to ensure alignment and collaboration across all initiatives.
Qualifications
- Leadership and Management experience
- Strategic Planning and Decision-Making skills
- Financial Oversight and Fundraising skills
- Understanding of Legal and Ethical Standards
- Excellent Communication and Collaboration skills
- Experience in non-profit governance is a plus
- Passion for jazz music and promoting gender diversity in the arts

TGJBS exists to provide quality jazz education to girls in underserved communities, with a particular focus on female empowerment and the preservation of women’s contributions to jazz, blues, and gospel music. Our programs include instrument study, performance workshops, mental health support, and self-defense classes, all designed to provide a comprehensive experience that helps young women thrive both personally and professionally.TGJBS will operate an annual summer camp, supported by volunteer educators, musicians, and mental health professionals.

Established in February 2022, TGJBS was founded by a group of jazz enthusiasts and educators dedicated to promoting the role of women in jazz, blues, and gospel music.
