Role Overview

As the Program & Public Policy Director, you will hold a pivotal leadership role within UBFSF. You will supervise Program Managers, develop policy proposals, manage partnerships, and ensure that all UBFSF initiatives are implemented effectively and sustainably. You will collaborate with the Board of Directors, Exeutive Committee, and various volunteer teams to shape programs that directly address the needs of marginalized communities- particularly those impacted by mass incarceration and systemic injustice.

Key Responsibilites

Daily & Weekly Duties:

  • Supervise program managers and provide ongoing leadership, support, and coaching
  • Draft and update internal and external program and policy initiatives in collaboration with relevant stakeholders
  • Meet weekly with program managers to assess progress, resolve challenges, and ensure alignment with UBFSF's mission
  • Recruit, screen, and onboard volunteer staff and program managers as needed
  • Train volunteer teams on program implementation, reporting requirements, and compliance standards
  • Attend weekly meetings with the Executive Committee and Media & Marketing Director to align messaging and promotion strategies
  • Track program performance and policy impact using approved evaluation frameworks

Monthly & Quarterly Responsibilities:

  • Plan and lead quarterly meetings of the Program & Policy Committee, where you will serve as President
  • Develop quarterly and annual budgets for all UBFSF programs and policy initiatives in coordination with the development committee
  • Coordinate with legal partners to develop and execute Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with universities, community organization, and legal entities
  • Oversee the creation and managment of UBFSF internship programs with academic insitutions
  • Analyze data and performance reports to assess the effectivness of all programs with acadmeic institutions

  • Support the Development team in grant writing, fundraising, and sponsorship outreach to support programmatic and policy goals
  • Represent UBFSF at organization-hosted events and external forums when applicable

Required Experience & Qualifications

  • Minimum of three years of supervisory experience, preferably within nonprofit, public policy, education, or community organizing settings
  • Demonstrated expereince in program development, public policy, or business administration
  • Strong understanding of systems impacting incarcerated and system-impacted populations
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects and teams remotely
  • Experience building partnerships with community organizations and academic institutions
  • Skilled in drafting proposals, coordinating stakeholder input, and presenting policy reccomendations

Established in 2014, it is a student and volunteer ran organization that was founded by incarcerated activist and author Ivan Kilgore. Our Vision: We believe everyone has a right to education that empowers them with solutions to social and economic problems caused by poverty and racism.
