Mission Statement
The Bay Area Association of Kidney Patients (BAAKP) was founded in 2007 as a 501c3 non-profit corporation with the mission to educate and support San Francisco Bay Area kidney patients. BAAKP is now composed of patients, friends and families of affected individuals, medical and ancillary professionals, and interested people from all over the United States. There are currently over 1100 individuals on the BAAKP mailing list. When Kidney Disease patients become more actively involved in their own health care, their health condition improves. Education and support encourage active patient participation.
Description
Chronic Kidney Disease is the loss of kidney function over time. Kidney disease touches 1 in 9 persons at some point during their lifetime. There are five stages of CKD; stage 5 being the complete loss of kidney function which requires treatment by dialysis or transplant.
These are the main activities of the BAAKP:
- Regular educational and support presentations (webinars). Meeting topics have included home dialysis, the implantable bio-artificial kidney, kidney diets, and the transplant programs at Stanford, UCSF, CPMC, and UC Davis.
- Community education through local health fairs and informational talks at service clubs.
Our website at http://www.baakp.org has notices of upcoming events and past newsletters. We also have numerous videos of past speakers and include links to other kidney resources.
Monthly Zoom support group meetings.
There are no charges for any of our activities; all are welcome! There are no dues or admission fees; we exist solely on donations and grants.
