About Mentor A Promise

Mentor A Promise empowers under-resourced youth through one-on-one mentorship, academic support, and community engagement. We believe that when young people are guided by caring adults, they gain the confidence and skills to thrive in school, work, and beyond.

Initiative Overview

One Light Forward mobilizes our network of mentors, mentees, alumni, and volunteers to perform one impactful act of community service each month. By scaling small, consistent actions, we strengthen neighborhoods, foster civic leadership, and deepen the bonds within the Mentor A Promise family.

Role Summary

As a One Light Forward Volunteer Ambassador, you’ll partner with Mentor A Promise staff and mentor-mentee pairs to plan, promote, and execute monthly service projects. You’ll be the on-the-ground spark that helps our community shine one light at a time.

Key Responsibilities
  • Project Support: Assist in coordinating 1-2 community service acts per quarter (e.g., park clean-ups, literacy drives, neighborhood beautification).

  • Outreach & Recruitment: Help recruit fellow volunteers, share opportunities on social media, and represent Mentor A Promise at local events.

  • Logistics & On-Site Help: Support event set-up/tear-down, manage supply distribution, and ensure participants have what they need.

  • Storytelling & Impact Tracking: Take photos, collect participant feedback, and submit brief impact reports to our program team.

  • Team Collaboration: Join monthly planning calls and "Light Talks" to brainstorm future service themes and share best practices.

Qualifications
  • Passion for youth development, community service, and civic engagement.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Reliable and organized, with the ability to follow through on commitments.

  • Comfortable using basic digital tools (email, Google Forms, social media).

  • Previous volunteer or event-planning experience is a plus-but not required!

  • Spanish fluency welcomed (helpful for bilingual outreach).

Benefits
  • Skill Building: Gain hands-on experience in event coordination, community outreach, and nonprofit operations.

  • Networking: Connect with local nonprofits, corporate partners, and a dedicated team of mentors and alumni.

  • Recognition: Earn a "One Light Leader" digital badge, receive letters of recommendation, and be spotlighted in our quarterly newsletter.

  • Community Service Hours: Perfect for students or professionals seeking volunteer hours or civic engagement credits.

  • Satisfaction: Join a mission-driven team making a tangible difference in NYC neighborhoods.

How to Apply
  1. Email your resume (or brief bio) and a short note (2-3 sentences) about why you’d like to join One Light Forward to beranobel@mentorapromise.org.

  3. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis; we’ll follow up within two weeks to schedule a 20-minute chat.
