Celebrate Mantua is a vibrant, community‑driven arts and resources festival in the Mantua neighborhood of West Philadelphia. It was conceived in 2024 by Iquail Shaheed and his organization, Dance Iquail!, evolving from the 2020 "Art Thrives from Black Lives" Black Lives Matter march into a celebratory, empowering event .
Held at Miles Mack Playground (near 36th & Aspen Streets), the day-long festival typically runs 11 a.m.-4 p.m. and features:
Live performances - drill and drumline teams like the West Powelton Steppers and Sixers Stixers, plus hip‑hop, jazz, modern dance showcases.
Dance & fitness classes - ballet, modern, Pilates, yoga, and line dancing sessions led by Dance Iquail!
Community resource fair - booths covering wellness, finance, voter engagement, and more whyy.org
Family-friendly fun - bouncy castles, face painting, water play areas, cartoon characters, and food vendors
The event spotlights local Black cultural resilience, aims to strengthen neighborhood cohesion, and raises awareness about the impact of gentrification. Backed by the Philadelphia Cultural Fund and the PA Council on the Arts, Shaheed aims to make it an annual highlight for the community.
In 2025, "Celebrate Mantua" is scheduled for Saturday, July 12, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Miles Mack Playground (3601 Aspen St.)

Mission Statement
Dr. Iquail Shaheed founded DANCE IQUAIL! (DI!) out of a commitment to telling stories of struggle through dance, motivated by his own lived experience growing up in the Mantua neighborhood of West Philadelphia, the poverty-impacted community where he was born and raised, and where Black and LGBTQ communities continue to do battle with systemic racism and homophobia.
Description
DI! brings artists together to open up about their autobiographical stories and to become a conduit for sparking innovation in the hearts and minds of changemakers in historically disenfranchised communities impacted by these same issues of poverty, drug and alcohol abuse, mass incarceration, systemic racism, and lack of resources. These efforts allow Black and brown artists to engage with work that is specific to them and tells their story. DI! shares these stories through: Premiere concert spaces, which dominate the current performing arts industry. Working-class public spaces, including community centers, prisons, jails, nursing homes, and other locations which make up the places where our stories are happening right now. DANCE IQUAIL! places these stories right back into the spaces and into the hands of those individuals and communities where their stories take place. DI! fosters this creative agency in the community by incorporating discussion groups and community creation into its creative process, working directly with those impacted by issues such as domestic abuse, addiction, the Black male experience, marginalization of Black women, and incarceration.
