Role Overview

As our Volunteer Employee Engagement Specialist, you’ll support efforts to strengthen our culture, elevate staff and volunteer voices, and create experiences that connect every team member to our mission. Working alongside the Chief People & Culture Officer, you’ll help design, execute, and iterate engagement programs tailored to a fast-growing, mission-driven organization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Program Support

    • Help plan and coordinate virtual/in-person events (town halls, learning lunches, volunteer appreciation gatherings).

    • Draft communications (newsletter articles, intranet posts) that share success stories, celebrate milestones, and spotlight individual contributions.

  • Recognition & Community Building

    • Aid in launching a peer-recognition platform-collect nominations, prepare announcements, and track participation.

    • Support affinity-group kick-offs and cross-team "coffee chats" to build belonging and connection.

  • Continuous Improvement

    • Gather feedback on engagement initiatives and propose refinements.

    • Research best practices in nonprofit engagement and present concise summaries of promising ideas.

Qualifications & Skills

Required:

  • 2+ years in employee or volunteer engagement, internal communications, or related HR/culture role.

  • Comfortable using basic survey tools (Google Forms, SurveyMonkey) and summarizing data.

  • Strong written and verbal communication; ability to craft engaging, mission-aligned messages.

  • Commitment of 5-8 hours/week for at least six months.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, HR, Organizational Psychology, or related field.

  • Experience with recognition platforms (Bonusly, Fond) or basic event-planning.

  • Background supporting DEI initiatives or affinity groups.

What You’ll Gain

  • Networking with nonprofit leaders, staff, and fellow volunteers

  • Formal acknowledgment of your contributions and a letter of recommendation
