Position: Volunteer Organizational Development Specialist
Location: New York, NY (Hybrid / Remote options)
Commitment: 5-8 hours/week for a minimum six-month term

About Us

Mentor A Promise is a nonprofit dedicated to breaking the cycle of homelessness through mentorship, education, and community. We partner with youth and families living in New York City’s temporary housing facilities to create pathways of hope, resilience, and opportunity.

Role Overview

As our Volunteer Organizational Development Specialist, you’ll lend your expertise to strengthen our internal capacity, foster a culture of continuous learning, and support change-management initiatives. You’ll work closely with our Chief People & Culture Officer and cross-functional teams to design and implement development programs that empower our staff and volunteers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Culture & Engagement Support

    • Assist with pulse-survey design, data analysis, and reporting to gauge team sentiment.

    • Co-create recognition initiatives and virtual team-building sessions that reinforce our core values.

  • Learning & Development Assistance

    • Help draft training modules (e.g., leadership fundamentals, effective communication, DEI awareness).

    • Support the launch of a peer-mentoring network by coordinating mentor-mentee matches and tracking progress.

  • Change Management Aid

    • Contribute to stakeholder communication plans for new process rollouts (e.g., CRM adoption, program-management tools).

    • Monitor feedback channels and summarize adoption challenges for follow-up.

  • Organizational Assessment

    • Conduct brief interviews or focus groups with staff/volunteers to surface development needs.

    • Compile findings into clear, actionable recommendations.

  • Best Practices Research

    • Survey emerging OD methodologies-micro-learning, action learning, e-coaching-and summarize applicability for a small nonprofit.

Qualifications & Skills
  • Required:

    • 2+ years’ experience in organizational development, learning & development, or change management (nonprofit experience a plus)

    • Strong analytical skills and comfort with basic survey tools (e.g., Google Forms, SurveyMonkey)

    • Excellent written and verbal communication

    • Ability to commit 5-8 hours/week for at least six months

  • Preferred:

    • Bachelor’s or master’s in Organizational Psychology, HR, Business, or related field

    • Familiarity with recognition platforms (e.g., Bonusly) or LMS systems

    • Prior volunteer or pro bono consulting experience

We partner with family temporary housing sites across New York, educational institutions, and community organizations to create a strong support network for young people experiencing homelessness, helping them overcome challenges and forge their own path to success. We connect students with our mentors for in-person and online programs.
