The Volunteer Captain plays a critical leadership role in the success of Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Detroit. As a member of the Executive Leadership Team, this volunteer will lead all volunteer efforts, both in the lead-up to and on the day of the event. They will act as the key liaison between volunteers and American Cancer Society staff, helping ensure a seamless, positive experience for all involved.

Key Responsibilities

Pre-Event:

  • Serve as the volunteer lead on the Executive Leadership Team

  • Collaborate with the Event Lead to recruit, secure, and schedule individual volunteers and volunteer groups

  • Assist with volunteer communications and preparation in the weeks leading up to the event

  • Attend Executive Leadership Team meetings to provide updates and input

Event Day:

  • Arrive early to check in with ACS staff and confirm final volunteer assignments

  • Oversee volunteer check-in and deployment

  • Ensure all volunteer roles are filled and reassign as needed throughout the day

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for all volunteer-related needs

  • Communicate any urgent needs or issues to ACS staff

  • Motivate and support volunteers throughout the event

Ideal Candidate:
  • Experienced leader or team coordinator (formal or informal roles)

  • Organized, dependable, and solution-oriented

  • Comfortable managing people and adapting to a fast-paced environment

  • Passionate about Making Strides and the mission to end breast cancer as we know it, for everyone
