Org. Setting and Reporting

The World Disaster Center (WDC) is an international volunteer-driven organization dedicated to ending disasters through innovative and resilient disaster management. The Head of Capitalization & Innovation, reporting to the Director of Programs, plays a pivotal role in designing innovative solutions, including app-based tools, and capitalizing on lessons learned to enhance WDC’s programs. This role offers the rewarding opportunity to be a global ally and hero in WDC’s world-changing story, with potential for future funding as the organization grows.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the ideation and design of innovative solutions, including apps, to address disaster management challenges.

  • Identify and integrate cutting-edge technologies and best practices to enhance WDC’s program effectiveness.

  • Document and analyze lessons learned from projects to inform future strategies and innovations.

  • Collaborate with the IT Manager to ensure technical feasibility of innovative app-based solutions.

  • Work with the Monitoring and Evaluation team to incorporate innovation metrics into program assessments.

  • Promote a culture of creativity and continuous improvement among volunteer teams.

  • Support fundraising efforts by showcasing innovative solutions in grant proposals and donor communications.

Education

A university degree (Bachelor’s or equivalent) in innovation management, technology, disaster management, or a related field is preferred. Equivalent professional experience demonstrating strong innovation or solution design skills may be accepted.

Work Experience
  • Experience in innovation, solution design, or knowledge management, preferably in disaster management or humanitarian work, with a passion for WDC’s mission.

  • Familiarity with app-based solutions or digital technologies for social impact is an advantage.

  • Ability to collaborate with diverse teams in a remote, volunteer-driven environment.

  • Commitment to a minimum of 6 months, giving your best as a world-changing hero.

Languages
  • Fluency in English is required.

  • Knowledge of another UN official language (e.g., French, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Russian) is an advantage.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include a review of their vision statement (cover letter or video) and a competency-based interview to assess alignment with WDC’s values and mission.

This is a volunteer position, reflecting WDC’s principle of dedicated individuals working without payment to achieve global impact. Volunteers are rewarded by being part of a transformative story, recognized as heroes and allies in ending disasters. While WDC may secure funding in the future, the true reward is the opportunity to change the world with your transparency, humility, and amazing skills. Candidates must have reliable internet access and be available for emergencies, including occasional nighttime hours. A minimum commitment of 6 months is required.
