About Powerful Voices
Location:
1544 S Snoqualmie St, Seattle, WA 98144, US
Mission Statement
Powerful Voices creates brave spaces with BIPOC girls and gender expansive youth to take charge of their own power as leaders, igniting their abilities to confidently express themselves, build community, and act against injustices affecting their lives.
Description
Powerful Voices is unique in the Seattle area because of our focus on issues affecting adolescent girls, and because we address these issues-through girl-led, strengths-based programs. We serve: Girls ages 12-19. Powerful Voices is focused on girls most impacted by oppression and violence. In 2013, 97% of the 350 girls we served were young women of color and 71% were living with a low or very low income. Powerful Voices also engages with 200+ allies (adults and young men) each year who are interested in working in solidarity with girls to create a more just world. Through our programs: 1. Powerful Choices: School and community based groups and 1:1 support. 2. Youth Employment Program: Groups provide pre-employment skills and produce youth-led social justice projects like a Zine and presentations at our annual Girlvolution Conference. 3. Case Management: Staff work 1:1 with girls to provide prevention and intervention strategies for employment, education support, mentoring, recreational programming, and counseling. 4. Community Engagement: Activities such as our annual Girlvolution Conference, Girl Justice training, and groups at the juvenile detention center support girls and the community to work together on girl?s issues to promote equity and justice.
