VOLUNTEER TO JOIN OUR BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Are you looking for a meaningful way to support abundant ecosystems, stable climate, and build resilient, equitable communities? Are you passionate about the positive impacts of non-profit work? Consider volunteering for our board!
We are seeking up to 5 new members to join Sierra Club BC’s Board of Directors, starting in September 2025. Responsible for the governance of Sierra Club BC, our Board supports us in our mission to build a brighter future.
ABOUT SIERRA CLUB BC
At Sierra Club BC, we’re building a movement that invites everyone to better care for the ecosystems that sustain us. The ecological and climate crisis is a collective issue we all face, but it’s not too late to turn things around.
We are working to repair relationships with the land, water, and all the living beings who share this home. Together, we can shift the paradigm from resource extraction to reciprocal relations. By grounding our work in evidence, respecting Indigenous leadership, empowering communities to take action and inviting new partnerships, we are supporting policies and actions that build healthy communities where the trees, salmon, bears and people will thrive.
ABOUT THE ROLE
As a member of our board, you are responsible for the governance of the organization. You will provide thoughtful oversight of Sierra Club BC’s strategic direction, utilizing your skills and experience to support the carrying out of its mission. It is essential that all board members are deeply aligned with SCBC’s mission and values.
TIME COMMITMENT
Directors will need to commit to a two-year term and can expect to spend up to 5 hours per month supporting Sierra Club BC activities.
- 4-5 Board Meetings a year (virtual 2-hour meeting, weekday evenings, approximately once every 2 months).
- Board Retreat held in September each year (1-2 days in-person event, weekdays, travel and meal cost covered).
- Join at least 1 Board Committee (meeting times vary, approximately 1 hour every 2 months).
ADDITIONAL INVOLVEMENT
- Participation in donor appreciation or key events (1-2 per year).
- Occasional advice to staff based on your skill set and experience.
LOCATION
As most of our meetings are virtual, directors can attend meetings remotely. Applicants from across BC are welcome. Our Offices are located on the unceded lands of the Musqueam, Tsleil-Waututh, and Squamish Nations (Vancouver) as well as those of the Lekwungen peoples (Victoria).
WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR
While we are considering a variety of candidates, due to our current needs we are especially excited to speak to candidates who bring one or more of the following:
- Financial acumen or accounting experience (non-profit experience preferred)
- Non-profit Society governance experience
- Fundraising, philanthropic, or donor relations experience
- Traditional and/or cultural knowledge
- Knowledge of environmental issues in BC
Sierra Club BC is committed to building a Board that reflects the full diversity of the communities we serve across the regions, disciplines, and identities of BC. We encourage applications from people of Indigenous ancestry, people of colour, 2SLGBTQQIPA individuals, persons living with disabilities, and people who are members of B.C.’s diverse communities. We are committed to building and maintaining a work environment that is welcoming to people who bring other ways of seeing, knowing, and communicating to our work.
Preference will be given to applicants who have an understanding and practice of equity, diversity, and inclusion. Selections will also factor age, geography, and diversity of the entire board. To learn more about our commitments to caring for all people, we invite you to read page 14 of our Strategic Plan found online here - https://sierraclub.bc.ca/resources/.
