ORGANIZATION: SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING FAIR OF METROPOLITAN DETROIT INC

Role Overview: The volunteer Co-Chairs are at the heart of the Science and Engineering Fair of Metro Detroit, overseeing the comprehensive planning and execution of this exciting annual event. Working collaboratively, the Co-Chairs will manage the day-to-day operations, coordinate a dynamic team of volunteer committees, and ensure the successful implementation of directives from the Board of Directors. This leadership role is crucial for bringing the science fair to life and serves as a primary point of contact for stakeholders. This position reports directly to the Board of Directors.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the overall operational planning and execution of the annual science fair.
  • Coordinate and provide guidance to all volunteer committee chairs and their teams.
  • Ensure that directives and strategic goals set by the Board of Directors are effectively implemented.
  • Serve as the main point of contact for internal and external inquiries regarding the science fair operations.
  • Facilitate regular meetings and communication among committee chairs to ensure alignment and progress.
  • Oversee the master event timeline and ensure key milestones are met.
  • Problem-solve and address any operational challenges that arise during the planning and execution phases.
  • Collaborate with the Board on strategic planning and post-event evaluation.

Desired Skills & Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in project management, event management, or operational leadership, preferably in a non-profit or volunteer-driven organization.
  • Strong leadership and team-building skills with the ability to motivate and manage diverse groups of volunteers.
  • Excellent organizational and planning abilities with a keen eye for detail.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact professionally with board members, volunteers, schools, students, and the public.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and delegate tasks effectively.
  • Proactive problem-solver with the ability to think strategically and adapt to changing circumstances.
  • Passion for science education and community engagement.

Commitment:

  • Significant time commitment required (~5 hrs/wk), particularly in the months leading up to the fair (10-40 hrs/wk), with flexibility for meetings and active operational oversight.
  • Attendance at key planning meetings and full availability during the science fair event. Attendance at the annual Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) is optional but encouraged.

The annual Science and Engineering Fair of Metro Detroit is a vibrant event that celebrates curiosity, innovation, and the pursuit of knowledge, and has been a tradition for 68 consecutive years. We bring together students from public and private schools (grades 3-12) across metropolitan Detroit (7 counties) to showcase their scientific talents and foster a lifelong passion for STEM. To make this event a success, we rely on a dedicated team of enthusiastic volunteers - and we're hoping you'll help us build the next generation of STEM leaders in the metro-Detroit and Michigan region!
