2025-2026 HBCU Style Drum Major Squad Co-Leads (High School Students)

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: SoulPhamm Inc

Phenom Drum Majors

Current high school students with significant hip-hop dance talent are invited to participate as Co-Leads for the 2025-2026 season of the Phenom Drum Major Squad. This will be Phenom's first year.

The purpose of the Co-Leads is to help us define and strengthen our high school program. You will be involved in high visibility events such as parades, college games, cheer exhibitions, light cheer/dance competitions, and NBA G-League games.

Co-Leads are responsible for studying the HBCU style of Drum Majoring and then infusing that style with hip-hop. Phenom would be the first performing/competitive community-based unit in the tri-state area, so this is an incredible opportunity for you to make an indelible mark! In September, a Coach will join you to help refine your stage presence. The Drum Major squad will include at least 2, but no more than 7 participants (boys/girls) who are in grades 8-12.

Starting in August, you will do a virtual practice on an evening you will choose along with the other Co-Leads. Starting on Saturdays, you will begin in-person practices for a three-hour window between 12pm and 5pm (to be finalized over the summer). Our current practice location is Downtown Newark.

We will track every hour of your service (which includes virtual/in-person practices, events, community service activities and workshops). At the end of your season in June 2026, we will provide you with a reference letter.

While the opportunity is open to students in high school, it is ideal for freshmen and sophomores given the busy schedule of the team. The team is also open to NYC residents who are willing to make the commute to Newark starting in September.

No cheer experience is required. No phone calls please.

About SoulPhamm Inc

Location:

7000 Hadley Road, Suite 1177, South Plainfield, NJ 07080, US

Mission Statement

Our mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of young people by providing unique artistic and athletic experiences and performances, and to assist them in achieving the highest standards of professionalism through the development of discipline, skill, confidence, cooperation, leadership, responsibility and character.

Description

Our vision is to promote virtue, equity, unity, justice, faith, charity and a sense of common purpose and brotherhood among all people with an emphasis on the development and advancement of young people through education, athletics, service and the arts.

SoulPhamm was incorporated as a nonprofit organization in the state of New Jersey on June 25, 2021 and is the "birth-child" of Coach Luis ("Lou") and Dr. Leisa Herrera ("Mz. Doc"). The organization exists to provide training to young people in a variety of sports and performing arts and unique opportunities to display those talents through competition and performance. By integrating mentoring, life skills, opportunities for community service and academic enrichment to the athletic/artistic program, we help make our scholar-athletes as well-rounded as possible, capable of meeting and overcoming any challenges they are faced with. Although Coach Lou passed away suddenly in January 2021, the official launch of SoulPhamm was held on June 26, 2021, which coincided with his birthday weekend. SoulPhamm will recognize its own founding, as well as the achievements of our young people every year on the fourth Saturday of June, as a tribute to the life and legacy of Coach Lou.
