Mission Statement
MISSION STATEMENT: Unity4Inclusion advocates and empowers People with Disabilities by uniting communities and helping break the barriers People with Disabilities face. Our mission is to increase connections between People with Disabilities and their communities, engaging change, progress, education, and most importantly, fostering hope for a brighter future towards Inclusion. WHY UNITY 4 INCLUSION Unity4Inclusion is based on 和 (wa) meaning Harmony in Japanese. Wa is a founding cultural principle in Japan. Wa is the embodiment of Unity; everyone working together, group survival, the collective is more important than the individual, and everyone looks out for one another. Harmony in Disability: The purpose of harmony is that people with disabilities are not alone. We are all one. We will work together as a team to raise awareness and to advocate for those with disabilities. Advocates who are part of Unity4Inclusion share their stories, creating awareness, insight, and hope.
Description
Sam Robinson, diagnosed with learning and intellectual disabilities, defied low expectations. Though he found community, he sought broader inclusion, longing to be "a bird without barriers." In 2016, in Madras, Oregon, he founded "The Advisory Committee of Jefferson County supporting people with disabilities" with his agent's encouragement and local organization support. The committee successfully hosted events, like a community dance, showcasing local advocacy. His perspective broadened globally after a trip to Poland. A turning point was learning about the 2016 Tsukui Yamayuri En attack in Japan, where disabled residents were murdered. Deeply affected, Sam wrote to the facility's director, receiving an invitation to visit. This solidified his commitment to global disability advocacy and inspired Unity4Inclusion.
