Our volunteer corps is called the Lumberjacks & Lumberjills of Canal Shores.

We welcome individuals as well as community groups looking to give back!

What we do: Don’t worry if you don’t own a chainsaw because we do a broad range of ecological restoration activities. Trail building, tree planting, weed whacking, raking, removing invasive species, trimming small brush with loppers, burning invasive brush, and creating and installing signage.

When: We typically meet Saturday mornings from 9-12 and work together as a single group. It’s more fun that way!

Where: Locations vary based on the needs of the space

How: Fill out our volunteer form. We will collect your email and communicate each week on where and when we meet.

Wear sturdy boots and layers
Please bring your own gloves and safety glasses
We will supply the tools, though you are always welcome to bring your own.

If you have any additional questions or other ways to be involved, please feel free to reach out to our Ecology Coordinator, Megan Hart ( mhart@canalshores.org).

Mission Statement

At Canal Shores Ecology, our mission is to restore and sustain native habitats along the North Shore Channel, fostering biodiversity and community engagement. Through the removal of invasive species, reintroduction of native plants, and development of accessible trails, we aim to create a thriving ecosystem that serves as a sanctuary for wildlife and a natural haven for the community. We are committed to empowering local volunteers and educating future stewards to ensure the preservation and enjoyment of this green space for generations to come.

Description

Canal Shores is more than a community golf course - it’s a green corridor where ecological restoration, community engagement, and outdoor recreation come together. The Ecology Program began as a grassroots effort to restore natural areas and has grown into a volunteer-powered initiative focused on sustainability, habitat restoration, and education.

Our goals are to restore native ecosystems like oak savanna and prairie, support pollinators and birds, improve trails, and connect people to nature through hands-on conservation. Volunteers play a key role in removing invasive species, planting natives, and maintaining restored areas.

With support from grants and hundreds of volunteers, we’ve launched an oak savanna restoration, expanded pollinator habitat, planted thousands of native species, and built partnerships with schools, scouts, and local organizations.

Whether you’re pulling buckthorn with our Lumberjacks crew, planting wildflowers, or exploring with a youth group, there’s a place for you in our growing community of stewards.

Join us on Saturday mornings or at one of our seasonal events. Together, we’re making Canal Shores more wild, welcoming, and connected.
