Historic Weapons Volunteer

ORGANIZATION: National Park Service

Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial is seeking volunteers with a passion for history and education. Historic weapons demonstrations are a highlight of operations, transporting visitors back to the War of 1812. Education of the public on period-accurate clothing and weapons provides an experience for visitors to learn about the experiences of military personnel during the war. The Historic Weapons volunteer will participate in demonstrations of firing muskets, rifles, or the site’s carronade.

Position Overview:

  • Providing musket and carronade demonstrations to visitors, pending certification
  • Providing historical information about the battle, the soldiers, and the weapons associated with the War of 1812.
  • Following prescribed interpretive techniques and conducting interpretive programs
  • Cleaning and maintaining weapons, continue drilling and assist in training other volunteers in the Duane Drill.

Qualifications:

  • Volunteers will receive a minimum of 6 hours of historic weapons training at Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial and must pass a written test prior to participating in demonstrations
  • Ability to carry and handle a flint-lock weapon
  • Ability to follow all NPS standards and Historic Weapons policy when participating in National Park Service historic weapons demonstrations
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
