Blomquist Garden Path and Hardscape Maintenance Assistant
Duke Gardens volunteer opportunities are ongoing opportunities that require a commitment of 2-4 hours per week for a minimum of six months. Volunteers must be 18 years or older to apply.
Days & Times needed: Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday mornings, (8:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. with some flexibility), year-round as weather permits
Qualifications & Skills: Path and Hardscape Maintenance assistants build, maintain and repair gravel paths in the Blomquist Garden of Native Plants. These tasks require physical stamina and strength to build path edges, chip and remove wood, clean out stream beds to remove sand and silt, and heavy weeding.
- Hardscaping, landscaping, path building or grounds maintenance experience is required.
- Must have upper body strength with the ability to lift ~50 lbs., with frequent bending, stooping, and kneeling while working outdoors on various terrain in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to comfortably carry and use garden tools such as rakes, shovels, etc.
- Manual dexterity (hand and finger movement) as well as the ability to drive a manual/stick shift is necessary to safely operate machinery equipment and golf carts (Dingo with bucket, Toro workman tractor, golf cart) to load and haul materials.
- Volunteers will be trained on how to operate machinery equipment (Dingo, Toro workman tractor) as well as golf carts and learn how to navigate the Gardens in these pieces of equipment. They will also be instructed on path materials - type, storage location, and usage. For each assigned task/project, they will be given specific guidance by a horticulture staff member.
- After volunteers are comfortable with the scope of assigned tasks, they must be able to work in a small group, independent of horticulture staff or consult staff with questions related to assigned tasks.
