Share My Smile is seeking an individual who has a heart for the foster care and adoption community and who desires to positively impact their lives. This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual who is passionate about the success of SMS’s beneficiaries and who has a track record of board leadership. The selected Board President will have achieved leadership stature in business, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector. His/her accomplishments will allow him/her to attract other well-qualified, high-performing board members.

The Board President is elected to hold office for a three or four year term or until a successor is elected and qualified. The Board President is eligible for re-election.

Requirements:

  • As a partner to the Executive Director (ED) and other board members, the Board President will provide leadership to SMS as they carry out their mission and vision.

  • The Board President will support and sustain the work of SMS and provide governance leadership and strategic fundraising support.

  • Personal commitment to devote the time necessary to perform the responsibilities of the Board President.

Responsibilities

Leadership, Governance and Oversight:

  • Being a trusted advisor to the ED as s/he develops and implements SMS’s strategic plan.

  • Developing and managing relationships and communicating with: funders, partners, and other stakeholders.

  • As a board member, approving SMS’s annual budget, audit reports, and material business decisions; being informed of, and meeting all, legal and fiduciary responsibilities.

  • Reviewing outcomes and metrics created by SMS for evaluating its impact, and regularly measuring its performance and effectiveness using those metrics.

  • Coordinating an annual performance evaluation of the ED.

  • Assisting the ED and Board of Directors in recruiting board members.

  • Periodically consulting with board members on their roles and helping them assess their performance.

  • Planning, presiding over, and facilitating board and committee meetings; partnering with the ED to ensure that board resolutions are carried out.

  • Acting as an ambassador for the organization.

  • Ensuring SMS’s commitment to a diverse board and staff that reflects the communities SMS serves.

Fundraising:

  • In collaboration with the ED and Board of Directors, generating substantial annual revenue and fostering SMS’s overall financial health.

  • Personally treating SMS as a top philanthropic priority reflected in an annual financial gift.

  • Ensuring that 100 percent of SMS’s board members make an annual contribution.

  • Identifying, qualifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major individual donors, corporate, and/or foundation gifts.

Qualifications:

Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications:

  • Extensive professional experience with significant executive leadership accomplishments in business, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector.

  • Demonstrated success as a nonprofit board member or board chair.

  • Track record of building credibility in the funding community that has resulted in major gifts to a nonprofit.

  • A commitment to and understanding of SMS’s beneficiaries and mission preferably based on experience.

  • Savvy diplomatic skills and a natural affinity for cultivating relationships and persuading, convening, facilitating, and building consensus among diverse individuals.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills coupled with natural affinity for public speaking.

  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a passion for improving the lives of SMS’s beneficiaries.

Please Note: This position does not require the person to be on-site. Most work can be done virtually, however the Board President is expected to attend and participate in SMS events as needed/available.

Description

Share My Smile provides support to foster and adoptive families in Iowa. We have three main programs to assist our families including Project Birthday Joy, Care for You Action, and Operation Holiday Smiles. These provide support for childrens' birthdays, backpacks full of necessities when children enter a new home, and financial support around the holiday season. Share My Smile hosts free or affordable family strengthening events to give our families a chance to spend time with one another in the community.

  • The Board of Directors meet virtually once a month, and in person once per quarter, and must be available to attend most events. The Board President must also be able to check emails regularly, especially during the day throughout the week.
