The Public Health Institute of Metropolitan Chicago (PHIMC) seeks new members of its Board of Directors to fill three-year terms. The ideal Director supports the values and work of PHIMC and is committed to moving the organization forward by fundraising, collaborating with the Executive Team on organizational development, and providing governance to the organization. PHIMC’s work focuses on promoting health equity and dismantling institutionalized racist and other oppressive barriers to affirming health care and other necessary services. PHIMC’s programs include HIV prevention and care services, HIV screening, Organizational Transformation, The Alliance, Reentry Services, Quality Management, Training and Technical Assistance, and Innovation in Public Health. PHIMC advances health justice and strengthens public health through innovation and partnerships that align people, strategies, and resources. Through organizational development, systems transformation, fiscal management, and program implementation, PHIMC leads efforts to strengthen the public health infrastructure in Illinois. PHIMC tackles critical health challenges in partnership with public health departments and other government agencies, community-based organizations and advocacy groups, academic and grant-making institutions, and health care providers and associations.

Expectations:

  • Generate revenue for the organization
  • Attend a minimum of six board meetings per year
  • Participate on a board committee
  • Participate in strategic and other planning activities of the Board
  • Participate in organizational governance activities
  • Support the Executive Team as needed

Preferred qualifications and skills:

  • Ability to and enthusiasm for raising revenue to support PHIMC
  • Experience in or knowledge of public health
  • Commitment to health equity grounded in the understanding that racism, economic oppression, sexism, homophobia, and other forms of oppression are institutionalized in America and contribute to poor health
  • General knowledge of non-profit governance including finance, fundraising, management
  • Previous experience on a non-profit board

Mission Statement

Public Health Institute of Metropolitan Chicago (PHIMC) enhances the capacity of public health and healthcare systems to promote health equity and expand access to services. Through organizational development, system transformation, fiscal management, and program implementation, PHIMC leads efforts to strengthen public health infrastructure in Illinois.

Description

PHIMC was founded in 1994 by Dr. Patrick Lenihan and the Commissioner of Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) Sister Sheila Lyne. Judith Johns served as the organization’s first Executive Director. Originally named Chicago Center for Health Systems Development, Inc., the organization was incubated at CDPH to support program implementation. In 2006, PHIMC became a fully independent organization and received recognition as a public health institute in 2007, becoming one of the 44 members of the National Network of Public Health Institutes.

With programming that now serves communities across the state, PHIMC has a proven track record with the following:

  • Wellness policy development and implementation
  • Community-based organization partnerships and network development
  • Access to healthcare and health systems performance
  • HIV/AIDS prevention and service coordination
  • Oral cancer prevention research
  • Emergency preparedness planning for bioterrorism and pandemic influenza
  • Research and policy development
  • Database development
  • Community service and workforce development
  • Community assessment research to inform public health infrastructure development
