The Frances Perkins National Monument is seeking volunteers to enrich the visitor experience this season. The 57-acre site honors the family homestead of U.S. Labor Secretary Frances Perkins (1880-1965), including the 1837 Brick House and barn, grounds, and trails.
This season, the new Visitor Contact Center and historic barn, as well as grounds and trails, will be open to the public 10am to 2pm, Thursday through Sunday, June 19th through September 28th. A self-guided exhibit on the "Life & Legacy of Frances Perkins" is installed in the Homestead Barn. The exhibit presents an overview of the life of Frances Perkins, highlighting her accomplishments alongside historic photographs. The barn is also home to display cases featuring objects and documents related to Perkins’ life, as well as equipment and tools from the historic property.
The Frances Perkins National Monument and its philanthropic partner, the Frances Perkins Center, are seeking two different types of volunteers this season. Volunteer docents are needed to monitor the barn and answer visitor questions for the full season. This position requires training on the life of Frances Perkins, the history of the site, and docent best practices.
From August 21st through September 28th, there is also a need for volunteer support at the welcome desk and gift shop in the Visitor Contact Center. In addition to training on Frances Perkins and the site, the volunteer will greet guests, answer questions, and operate a point of sales system to sell merchandise. These volunteers would also open and close the barn and Visitor Contact Center.
Volunteer shifts are available throughout the season and can be flexible. However, preference will be given to those who can commit to a consistent weekly schedule. Volunteer training will be provided by the National Park Service and Frances Perkins Center.
