Now going into our 28th year bringing the joy of writing and performing to Chicago Public School students, we are looking to expand our board! At the moment, our members have professional affiliations in finance, publishing, social work, performance, and tech, among others. We typically meet every other month as a full board and alternating months in our subcommittees, both via zoom. Because we meet remotely, Chicago residency isn't a requirement (we have one member in another state and one in another country)-- but we're looking for folks who can bring energy and enthusiam to the literacy advocacy work we do in the city.

Mission Statement
PlayMakers Lab (formerly Barrel of Monkeys) is an ensemble of actor/educators who create an alternative learning environment in which children share their personal voices and celebrate the power of their imaginations. PML accomplishes this through creative writing workshops and in-school performances of children’s stories. PML also engages the broader community in support of the visions of children through public performances of their work.
Description
PlayMakers Lab (formerly Barrel of Monkeys) is an arts education theater ensemble that works with some of the most under-served students in Chicago. PML achieves its mission by:
- teaching fundamental creative writing skills;
- providing a safe and supportive learning environment;
- building self-esteem and confidence in children;
- adapting stories written by children for the stage by professional actors;
- and presenting a smart, funny theater experience.
PML’s programming is comprised of three branches: our in-school residency program, an after-school program, and public performances. While each of these branches of our programming is essential to our mission of empowering the youth of Chicago with their creative voices, our school residency program is the core work of our organization.
