Unturning Steel, Inc. is seeking a Social Media Intern (Volunteer) to help manage and grow our presence on LinkedIn and Facebook, with potential to expand into other platforms like Instagram, or YouTube based on your interests and experience.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to gain hands-on experience in nonprofit communications, social media strategy, and veteran-focused community outreach. Ideal for students, emerging professionals, or anyone looking to build a meaningful portfolio while giving back.
What You’ll Do:
Manage weekly content creation and scheduling for LinkedIn and Facebook.
Post updates, stories, campaign highlights, and community engagement content.
Draft compelling copy and suggest visuals that align with our mission and voice.
Work directly with the Communications Director to brainstorm and implement social media campaigns.
Monitor engagement and report on social media metrics.
Support the growth of our digital brand, community storytelling, and fundraising visibility.
Help maintain consistency in branding and tone across platforms.
What You’ll Gain:
A strong resume-building experience in nonprofit marketing and social media management.
Personalized letter of recommendation upon successful completion.
Mentorship from nonprofit leadership and communications professionals.
Real-world impact-your work will help reduce veteran suicide and build career pathways for transitioning service members.
Flexibility to explore new platforms, test creative ideas, and contribute to our evolving digital presence.
Who We're Looking For:
Someone who can commit at least 5 hours/week (up to 10 for those seeking deeper internship experience).
A self-starter with strong writing skills and creativity.
Experience or interest in LinkedIn and Facebook best practices.
Familiarity with Canva or similar tools is a plus.
Alignment with our mission of empowering veterans, building community, and strengthening American manufacturing.
Excellent communication and reliability-willing to provide weekly updates on progress.
Intern vs. Volunteer Note:
This opportunity can be structured as either a volunteer role or an unpaid internship.
Volunteers may contribute flexibly as time allows.

Mission Statement
Our mission is to fight against veteran suicide by addressing the transitional stresses that so many of our nation’s heroes face. We provide veterans with the community, purpose, and certainty they need to successfully transition into civilian life. Through education, training, and certification, we prepare them for meaningful careers in the U.S. manufacturing sector, which is in urgent need of skilled talent.
Description
Unturning Steel was founded in honor of MAJ Sean P. Leahy, USMC, and the 125,000+ veterans lost to suicide since 2001. We are dedicated to helping military families find stability, purpose, and community in the civilian world.
As a nonprofit uniting U.S. manufacturing and military communities, we bridge the gap between transitioning service members and American industry. Our programs focus on workforce training, job placement, and industry partnerships through DoD SkillBridge and leading manufacturers.
Through our partnership with the University of Tennessee’s Reliability & Maintainability Center (RMC), we help veterans earn industry-recognized certifications in reliability, maintenance, and asset management. These credentials prepare them for high-demand careers in industrial maintenance, reliability engineering, and advanced manufacturing.
UTS has been recognized with the Best Cultural Innovation Award by Efficient Plant and will place 36 trained service members into jobs in 2025. We partner with top industry leaders and training institutions to strengthen U.S. manufacturing.
