ORGANIZATION: Volunteers for Youth

  • 1 person is interested

"Uproot U" is a partnership program with Rewild Earth, a local invasive species removal organization that hosts multiple workdays for community members and students in Orange County. This 2 hour recurring program is directed towards local youth in order to teach about the importance of invasive species removal as well as the power each and every one of us holds in being able to help the environment. The program consists of a mini lesson and an actual workday for the youth. The program will be held 9-11am every third Saturday of the month.

The mini lesson is intended to give background as to why the participants are participating and the importance of their work as well as introducing what will be uprooted or cut down. During this, there would be an open floor for questions by the youth about the workday, invasive species in general, or career exploration in the field of environmental protection (much of the leaders at Rewild Earth either have jobs in the preservation field or previously held jobs of that sort and would love to speak about their experiences).

The actual workday is to provide hands on engagement in a way that shows participants that they can make a tangible impact. It has been proven that spending time outside and engaging with nature even for a little bit each day is beneficial to emotional wellness and physical fitness. The workday portion in this program taps into both aspects and allow the participants to leave feeling that they made a difference rather than just sitting and learning.

Jersey Mike's lunch will be provided!!

About Volunteers for Youth

Location:

250 Lloyd Street, Suite 103, Carrboro, NC 27510, US

Mission Statement

Volunteers for Youth provides services to Orange County youth to integrate them into the community in ways that help them make responsible choices and recognize that they have a stake in their future.

Description

Volunteers for Youth works with high risk youth through three primary programs. The Mentoring Program provides positive adult role models to young people between the ages of nine and fourteen through one-on-one and group mentoring. One-on-one mentors agree to spend at least two hours a week together for one year. The Juvenile Community Service Program works with young people who have been court-ordered to complete an assigned number of community service hours. Youth are placed in nonprofit settings throughout Orange County and supervised by volunteer worksite supervisors. Teen Court is an alternative court program for middle and high school students. First time offenders are tried and sentenced by a jury of their peers. Teen volunteers take the roles of prosecutor, defense attorney, clerk, baliff, and juror to conduct these proceedings.
