Next month Creative Mental Wellness will be initiating a new program: DAISY's In-Person Book Clubs. (If you're wondering...DAISY is our mascot--DAISY The Mental Health Dachshund.) DAISY’s In-Person Book Clubs are (in-person) reading and discussion groups designed to reduce mental health stigma, spark healing conversations, provide healthy coping activities, and build supportive community spaces for all ages. Every month, a carefully and purposely selected book is highlighted that centers on mental health/wellness, behavioral health, or substance use recovery, offering readers a chance to learn, connect, and reflect through the author’s words. Discussions are guided/facilitated by the Executive Director of Creative Mental Wellness (Seanda), ensuring a safe, respectful, welcoming environment.
The program is intentionally inclusive & will ultimately offer 3 book club tracks (1 for adults, 1 for adolescents, & 1 for younger children). However, because we are just getting started, we will begin in July hosting only the adult book clubs & will roll out the adolescents' & children's book clubs later this year. Book clubs will be hosted numerous times each month at various locations around the Greater Houston area. All book clubs during the same month will highlight the same book. (We want to make the book clubs accessible to everyone so we're trying to accommodate people's busy schedules.)
Volunteers are needed to assist with the book clubs. We'd like to have help setting up, greeting people attending the book clubs, fielding questions (e.g. where to sit, how the book clubs work, etc.), & help breaking down after the book club ends. The time committment for each book club would be between 1 & 3 hours--whatever you can spare.
When to volunteer & which book clubs to assist with is negotiable. We're still lining up venues, so your help can be dependent on where you live, when you're available, etc. So far we've requested library meeting rooms in the northwest, northeast, west, east, & south areas of Houston. We're also hoping to host book clubs at coffee shops, therapy practices, & any other businesses that are good fits with our mental wellness mission.
If you're interested & could possibly help us, please reach out & we can provide additional details & discuss whether this might be a good fit for you. Creative Mental Wellness is very intentional about ensuring that our volunteers benefit personally while helping our organization. Volunteers are valuable commodities, & we are grateful for those who help us make this world a better & more healthy place!
