Are you passionate about grassroots change, food justice, youth empowerment, and cultural preservation? Sixth Street Community Center (SSCC), a long-standing anchor on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, is seeking dedicated and values-driven individuals to join our Board of Directors.

About Sixth Street Community Center

Sixth Street Community Center (SSCC) has been a vital institution on the Lower East Side since 1978. Grounded in social justice and community empowerment, SSCC addresses the needs of our diverse neighborhood through programs focused on food justice, youth and family development, cultural enrichment, and holistic wellness. Our initiatives include a food pantry, community-supported agriculture (CSA), youth leadership programming, and urban agriculture--driven by our commitment to equity, sustainability, and community-rooted change.

Role Overview

As a member of the Board of Directors, you will play a key role in shaping SSCC’s vision and strategy. Board members collaborate with staff and community leaders to guide the organization’s direction, ensure financial health, and act as ambassadors for our mission and work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to setting and assessing organizational goals, programs, and strategic plans.
  • Engage in fundraising through personal contributions and outreach to networks and potential funders.
  • Champion SSCC’s mission and elevate its visibility by leveraging personal and professional networks.
  • Provide guidance on budget planning and ensure the organization remains fiscally responsible.
  • Work closely with the Executive Director, Board Chair, fellow board members, and staff to advance the mission and support key initiatives.

Desired Backgrounds

We are currently seeking board members with expertise in the following areas:

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) with comptroller or financial oversight experience
  • Program Management and nonprofit operations
  • Marketing & Communications
  • Program Evaluation and impact measurement
  • Law (nonprofit, contracts, or community-based legal expertise)
  • Human Resources
  • Fundraising & Grant Writing

Qualifications

  • Passion for food justice, equity, wellness, and grassroots community organizing
  • Experience in at least one of the above-listed professional areas
  • Willingness to contribute timeand/or fundraising capacity
  • Commitment to collective leadership and working in diverse, intergenerational spaces
  • Prior board experience is helpful but not required
