Become a Project Leader to support Black in Mayberry's FREEDOM: A Juneteenth Art Exhibition event! A multiday celebration of Black art, culture, and liberation honoring Juneteenth through exhibitions, performances, and community engagement.

Why: Black in Mayberry is looking BEST is looking for project leaders to support their Juneteenth Art Exhibition event! This event aims to commemorate Juneteenth by centering Black creativity, fostering dialogue on freedom, and uplifting the community through art and shared history. Local Black artists, youth programs, and community organizations promoting racial equity and education will be uplifted due to your support as a volunteer. As a volunteer, you will ensure smooth operations, amplify outreach, and help create a welcoming, impactful experience for all attendees.

Who: Black in Mayberry is primarily focused on addressing the systemic and institutional racism that robs, burdens and disrupts the lives of Black people in the United States of America. Through the application of art and education we strive for political, social, economic and legal change.

What to Expect:

As a Project Leader, you will make sure volunteers are completing one of the following roles:

Art Protection: Monitor exhibition areas to ensure guests do not touch or damage artwork (the responsibilities the 22nd - 27th shifts will mostly contain).

Guest Assistance: Answer questions, provide directions, and offer general support to visitors.

Workshop Support: Help facilitate art workshops, including setup, cleanup, and assisting participants.

Setup & Maintenance: Prepare art stations, arrange displays, and keep the space tidy throughout the event.

Artist Support: Assist artists with supplies, logistics, and any needs during the exhibition.

As a Project Leader you may also be asked to do the following:

Help your on-site coordinators unload and pack up their event supplies.

Setting up necessary chairs and stages for events.

Facilitating the proper organization and cleanliness of venues.

Providing high levels of customer service.

Welcoming guests to the venue and guiding them to their respective location.

Setting up and take down of event.

Providing relevant information to event attendees and volunteers.

Aiding in event packing before and after the event.

Help your on-site coordinators unload and pack up their event supplies.

Ensure volunteers are working safely, efficiently, and are having fun!

All project leaders must be available to receive training via Zoom on June 16th at 6pm (invitation will be sent upon sign up; if you want to volunteer but cannot attend the meeting, please contact the opportunity coordinator below)

Water and light snacks will be provided (lunch vouchers may be provided; will confirm in follow-up emails closer to the event).

This Juneteenth Event happens over the course of 10 days. They are broken up between 3 Program Days and 7 Art Exhibition Days. Here is a list of what each day will consist of. Please read through this carefully and chose which day(s) you want to sign up for by click the drop-down menu below to sign up!

Program Days (most support needed on these days)

Thursday June 19th: Opening Ceremony + Exhibition

Shift 1: 12:30 PM - 5:00 PM

Shift 2: 5:00 PM - 9:30 PM

Friday June 20th: Family Art Day

Shift 1: 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM

Shift 2: 1:30 PM - 5:30 PM

Saturday June 28th: Guided Tour + Panel Discussion

Shift 1: 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM

Shift 2: 1:30 PM - 5:30 PM

Art Exhibition Days

June 22nd - 27th

Shift 1: 11:30 PM - 2:30 PM

Shift 2: 2:30 - 5:30 PM

What's Required:

All project leaders must be available to receive training via Zoom on June 16th at 6pm.

Sensitivity and awareness to volunteer in a primarily Black space that is focused on topics such as racism and the intersection where art meets activism.

No experience necessary!

Must be able to lift up to 10-40lbs (or ask for other tasks by emailng the Opportunity Leader)

Must be able to be on your feet during your shift in order to move throughout the event (seating will be provided to rest throughout your shift; wear comfortable shoes to move throughout the event!)

On-site free parking is available for all volunteers. More details will be provided upon signup!

Dress code: please wear a black shirt and pants.
