At Economic Democracy Advocates (EDA), we create cooperative solutions to support common needs. As a result, we intentionally seek opportunities to support availability of food, water, and power to all Americans. Our vision is a movement to foster resilient networks advancing participatory democracy for sustaining life.
EDA is eight years old. Although small, we have a presence in six states and seek opportunities to increase our impact. Strategically, we accomplish this through three pillars (Sustain EDA, Local Impact, and Enhace our Reach). During this period we are transforming our membership and business models to ensure the longer viability of the organization.
To support this period of transformation, EDA seeks a nonprofit accountant or CPA to provide help enhance our current financial position. This person will serve as a controller to improve our current accounting system.
EDA utilizes Quickbooks. We are unable to develop reliable financial reporting through the system. The volunteer accountant will work with our Treasurer to ensure the chart of accounts and systems align appropriately to produce reliable reports. Currently, the Treasurer spends hours manually creating the reports.
At the completion of the assignment, Quickbooks will be setup to ensure it can promptly produce the following reports on a monthly, quarterly, or annual basis:
- Statement of Financial Position
- Statement of Activities
- Statement of Cash Flows
- Statement of Functional Expenses
Our current expectation is that this volunteer engagement will have a set duration. We would be excited if the volunteer would like to remain and support the mission after the engagement; this is not the expectation.

Description
Economic Democracy Advocates was launched to advocate for equitable and sustainable management of food, water, and energy systems in the United States. We are a full-service agency providing research, education, and advocacy training to link citizens with legislation and elected officials to support economic democracy.
EDA strives to be a leading organization dedicated to research, education, and grassroots advocacy for governmental legislation to support meeting basic human needs sustainably.
EDA acknowledges a dual responsibility: to engage in the preservation and regeneration of our commons through grassroots economic democracy and to support these measures through legislative policy actively. In essence, we recognize ourselves as advocates for economic democracy through political democracy.
We envision a system that will restore this integrated worldview and meet the needs of humanity in the future. This is economic democracy.
Economic democracy is neither capitalism nor socialism. It’s a localized, self-reliant system of resource use that asks all people to take an active role in shaping their community’s financial and ecological future.
