Rose Garden Gardening Asst.
Duke Gardens volunteer opportunities are ongoing and require a commitment of 2-4 hours per week for a minimum of six months. Volunteer applicants must be 18 years of age or older.
Days & Times needed: Tuesday or Thursday mornings (8:00-11:00 am), year-round as weather permits
Qualifications & Skills: The Rose Garden is the first garden to greet visitors to the Historic Gardens when entering from the main entrance, and keeping it tidy and beautiful is pivotal to the Gardens. Rose Garden Gardening Assistants support horticulture staff by cultivating and maintaining the Rose Garden and the Mediterranean/xeric-style border around the Roney Fountain by performing gardening tasks, including, but not limited to, pruning, mulching, cutting back and deadheading roses, assorted perennials and xeric plants as well as weeding and thinning aggressive plants in plant beds, paths and containers. Additional seasonal tasks include mulching plant beds and tree rings, as well as pruning and fertilizing aquatic plants in the Roney Fountain basin. These tasks involve bending, climbing, kneeling, reaching, lifting, standing, and stretching, as well as the use of garden tools.
- Interest or willingness to learn about maintaining roses and other herbaceous perennial plants
- Interest or ability to learn how to handle cacti and succulents
- Interest and willingness to identify common garden weeds
- Able to work in a full-sun environment
- Able to bend, kneel, lift buckets, climb into raised plant beds, and over low garden walls as needed.
- Able to physically perform repetitive garden tasks in varying weather conditions with the presence of spiky plants, poison ivy and insects.
- With training, able to drive a golf cart to transport garden debris and tools.
- Able to verbally communicate via radio with other volunteers and staff to relay information.
- Able to work on a team of volunteers or independently to perform needed tasks and take direction from staff as needed.
