Duke Gardens is seeking a volunteer Woodworker Assistant!
Duke Gardens volunteer opportunities are ongoing and require a commitment of 2-4 hours per week for a minimum of 6 months. Volunteer applicants must be 18 years of age or older.
Days & Times needed: Tuesday or Wednesday mornings, (8 a.m-noon), year-round as weather permits.
Qualifications & Skills: Woodworker Assistants maintain benches, fences, and other wooden structures in the Culberson Asiatic Arboretum.
- Woodworking experience is a must!
- Some garden experience or some plant knowledge is a plus.
- Must be able to lift to 50 lbs., bend, stoop, kneel on various terrain while performing tasks outdoors in varying weather conditions in presence of insects and poison ivy.
- Ability to comfortably carry and safely operate woodworking tools (sander, saw, etc.) and other garden/carpentry tools.
- Attention to detail is key. Manual dexterity (hand and finger movement) is necessary.
- After volunteers are comfortable with the scope of assigned tasks, they must be able to work in a small group, independent of horticulture staff or consult staff with questions related to assigned tasks.
