Lake Mead - Government Wash Primitive Campground Host

ORGANIZATION: National Park Service

TIME COMMITMENT: The primitive campground host must commit to a minimum of three months or longer to participate in the program. Volunteer must provide 24 hours per week of service to the park in exchange for their RV site. Volunteer will perform their duties during day light hours.

PROGRAM GOAL: The purpose of the primitive campground host position is to be the eyes and ears of the park and offer campers the opportunity to engage, early on, with a park representative. The host will provide positive educational interactions with campers about backcountry camping rules and regulations and what recreational opportunities are available at the park and surrounding areas.

RESPONSIBILITIES/DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: The primary responsibility of the campground host is to meet, greet, and educate campground visitors on the rules and regulations of the campground and the park, as well as, to share knowledge of the wealth of available recreational opportunities in the area during day light hours. Hosts are often the first uniformed National Park Service (NPS) representative the public encounters in the campground; therefore, hosts are required to wear the official Lake Mead volunteer uniform while on duty.

Qualifications:

Volunteer must be an adult and possess the following:

● Must provide their own RV that is fully contained.

● Must enjoy working with people from a variety of backgrounds

● Strong communication skills

● Have a willingness to learn about the park's resources

● Must be able to walk two to five miles a day on uneven desert terrain and surfaces.

● Ability to read and research area information for accurate dissemination


Note: This position’s responsibilities are performed in a primitive campground. Currently, there are no amenities provided for the host sites; although, the park is working on establishing amenities in the near future. Volunteer will need to regularly go to the nearest NPS campground (Callville Bay or Las Vegas Bay) to fill their water tank and empty their grey/black water tank.
