OPCS is seeking weekend volunteer support for our low barrier congregate shelter, Casa Del Pueblo!
This role supports weekend lunch service at our shelter by preparing and serving food, maintaining a clean and welcoming environment, and assisting clients with basic needs. The volunteer shift lasts from 9:30 AM to 1:30 PM, with some flexibility to adjust hours as needed.
We welcome volunteers who can commit to either Saturday, Sunday, or both days. A minimum three-month commitment is required.
Duties and Responsibilities:
* Lunch Service: Prepare and serve basic food and beverages-such as sack lunches, fresh fruit, tea, and lemonade-for shelter clients. Distribute donated food items upon request. After service, clean the kitchen and dining area, including putting away food, wiping down counters, removing trash, sweeping floors, and setting out afternoon snacks.
* Shelter Support: Provide general support as needed, including interacting with clients, responding to requests, assembling hygiene kits, writing encouragement notes, and assisting with other tasks as assigned.
Qualifications:
* Openness to working in a low-barrier shelter environment for unhoused individuals.
* Compassionate and empathetic attitude towards shelter guests.
* Basic understanding of food safety and hygiene practices.
* Ability to work collaboratively with shelter staff and other volunteers.
* Ability to maintain client confidentiality (following HIPAA guidelines).
* Good communication skills.
* Reliability and punctuality.
* Must be 18 years or older.
