The Human Services Council creates and fosters programs that educate, safeguard and empower the people of our communities.

Description

For almost seven decades, the Human Services Council has identified unmet community needs and has "filled in the gaps" by creating and fostering programs that educate, safeguard and empower people living and working in our communities. Throughout this time, our initiatives have focused on alcohol and drug prevention, supportive housing, child advocacy, homelessness, hunger, medical and behavioral healthcare for children and adolescents, volunteerism and mentoring. Collaborating with other organizations, the Human Services Council serves over 8,000 children, families and individuals each year, ensuring the immediate delivery of critical services in an efficient and effective manner.

Current Programs and Projects of HSC:

N orwalk Mentor Program: Established in 1986, the Norwalk Mentor Program (NMP), a program of the Human Services Council in partnership with the Norwalk Public Schools, was the first school-based mentoring program in the country. The Program’s premise is to match students with positive adult role models that can make a significant difference in the lives of the students. The NMP coordinates a structured one-on-one relationship between a student and adult volunteer. This provides participants in grades K-12 with an adult who meets with them for approximately one hour per week during the school year and engages in academic and/or social activities conducive to the school setting. A mentor encourages positive choices, promotes high self-esteem, supports academic achievement and introduces the mentee to new ideas. The mentors are friends and role models and spend each week having fun with their mentee: playing cards, reading, sports, arts and crafts, or just talking.

Children’s Connection: A nationally accredited Children’sAdvocacyCenter, Children’s Connection has been providing quality, caring services to more then 3,000 abused and neglected children in the greaterNorwalk community for over 35 years. The mission of Children’s Connection is to provide on-site agency collaboration and the use of the multidisciplinary team approach in prevention, investigation, assessment, protection, referral for prosecution and treatment of child sexual/severe physical abuse and neglect.

Dr. Robert E. Appleby School Based Health Centers: Provide on-site medical and behavioral healthcare services to children and adolescents in Norwalk’s three high schools and three middle schools (mental health only).

Mid-Fairfield Substance Abuse Coalition: One of thirteen Connecticut Regional Action Councils (RACs) created by the State Legislation in 1989. MFSAC is a regional resource to support local initiatives and a proud member of the Connecticut Prevention Network (CPN). MFSAC is focused on the prevention and awareness of substance abuse and works to bring resources to those who need it most through a comprehensive approach including education, awareness, and community action. Our mission is to bring recognition and resources to address substance abuse and its effects onNorwalk, Weston,Wilton, andWestport communities through collaborations, education and awareness, and community attentiveness.

40 South Main Street Supportive Housing: Consisting of 44 single occupancy units,40 South Main Street provides residents with the dignity and responsibility that stable housing provides. Today,40 South Main Street advances the economic and community development of theSouth Norwalk neighborhood, contributing to its vitality and growth.
